Reed is another surname that is sometimes used as a given name, mostly for boys, but very occasionally for girls. The surname is Scottish or English and in some cases designates a red-haired or "ruddy" ancestor, and in other cases can indicate an ancestor who lived near reeds. As a given name, Reed has never been exceedingly popular, but has been steadily used since at least the 19th century.
